Choosing Quilt Batting: Cotton, Wool or Blend?

Batting is the soft middle layer between your quilt top and backing. It’s easy to overlook, but the type you pick changes how a quilt feels, drapes and washes.

The classic choice. Cotton batting is fairly thin and flat, breathable, and softens beautifully with washing (giving that lovely crinkled, antique look). It’s a safe, all-round pick for bed and lap quilts.

Wool

Wool is light yet warm, with more loft so your quilting really stands out. It’s wonderful for cooler climates and shows off intricate stitching — though it usually costs more and needs gentle washing.

Polyester and blends

Polyester is affordable, durable and holds loft well, making quilts feel puffier. An 80/20 cotton-polyester blend is a popular middle ground: most of cotton’s flat, natural feel with a little extra body and easier care.

How to choose

There’s no single “best” — match the batting to the quilt:

  • Want a flat, traditional look that washes to a soft crinkle? Choose cotton.
  • Want warmth and high-relief quilting? Choose wool.
  • Want value and easy care? Choose a cotton-poly blend.

Also check the label’s recommended quilting distance — how far apart your stitching can be before the batting shifts. When in doubt, ask us; we’re happy to help you pick.
