How to Care for and Store a Quilt

A handmade quilt can easily last for generations — it just needs a little care. The good news is that “care” mostly means washing it gently and not very often.

Washing

Wash a quilt only when it genuinely needs it. Use cool water, a mild detergent, and the gentlest cycle your machine offers (or wash by hand in the bath for something precious). Skip the fabric softener and harsh stain removers, which break fibres down over time.

Drying

Heat is the enemy. Dry flat where you can — laying the quilt over a clean sheet on a bed or floor keeps its shape. If you use a dryer, choose the lowest heat and take it out while still slightly damp. Avoid hanging a wet quilt, as the weight can strain the seams.

Storing

A few habits keep a stored quilt in good shape:

  • Fold loosely (or roll) and refold along different lines now and then so creases don’t set.
  • Store somewhere cool, dry and dark — not a hot attic or damp garage.
  • Use a cotton bag or pillowcase rather than plastic, so the fibres can breathe.

Everyday use

Quilts are made to be used. Rotate which ones are on the bed, spot-clean small spills promptly, and enjoy it — a gently worn quilt is a loved one.
